Our partner RBKS runs a residential school, education complex, senior secondary school, and postgraduate collage at Jhadol block in Udaipur district. In total 1200 girls are studying at the school and college, 400 girls being provided with residential accommodation. The water supply conditions and sanitation facilities were very poor with a scarcity of clean water for drinking and domestic purposes, In the summer months water was being purchased from outside sources at considerable expense.

The aim of the project was to construct a rain water harvesting system using water from the flat roofs of the school and the construction of a large 400,000 litre storage tank.

In addition the school faced an acute problem of insufficient and poor quality toilet facilities for the girls. The project therefore included the constructionm of  a toilet block with eight toilets and eight bathrooms. There will be regular interactions between girls and health workers in the area so as to propagate proper sanitation practices.

The concept of application of  rainwater harvesting systems was also shared with the students; they were made aware of the structure and the need for conserving water. The students understood the technology and prepared a model and exhibited it during their school exhibition.

This project had another dimension of developing a replicable model of a rainwater harvesting system and constructing a sanitation block in other government or private hostels. An advocacy campaign for this initiative was undertaken with Government officials at the block Udaipur District, division, state level and representatives of voluntary agencies and donor agencies. RBKS is also going to replicate the concept in another hostel Education Complex and Government Primary School in Kotra block, with the support of Wells for India.
